Name: Ion Ayres Age: 20 City: Jerusalem Alignment: Neutral Birthday: November 13 Zodiac: Scorpio Languages: Gypsy dialect, Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish and English. Religion:Superstitious, rather than religious Powers: Sixth sense. Currently he has a certain ‘instinct’ that warns him that something bad is going to happen. Mostly this relates to himself, things around him- it’s a sense that helps him avoid dangerous situation. His dreamseer powers are as of now dormant, the price he will pay eventually when they come into function is his sanity. |
As if Jerusalem lacked ethnic variety- Ion is neither Jewish nor Christian nor Muslim or Armenia. His heritage is Roma, the ethnic group of Gypsies which are settled in south-east Europe and Turkey. Due to the fact he is Gypsy mixed with Eastern European it gives him his dark hair and light eyes and skin. His people have been persecuted for centuries Ion has always been outcast within a group of outcasts. Even among the gypsies- his own people- he was always considered an outsider because of an absent father. He spent most of his childhood moving around the Balkan area, he was in Croatia, Russia, Turkey- and several other places he was far too young to recall. Like other children from the Gypsy community he was instructed with them and learned their dialect, their traditions and music. However Ion was never accepted into the community for his inability to control his stealing tendencies plus the fact his father was not of Gypsy origin. He’s never met his father nor did he ever get the chance to ask his mother. When he was around twelve his mother fell very ill. So far she had been the one keeping him from being too mistreated by others, she had been the one who protected him and took care of him- now as she fell ill many fellow Gypsies turned around to blame her sickness on Ion. To remind him that he was a bad omen. That he had been born under the wrong stars. Left behind by the other Gypsies, a kid alone and with nothing for himself, he scampered across in Turkey where he befriended a family that took him in for a few years. During this time he learned Turkish and Arabic with his adopted family. Then the young gypsy learned that no kindness comes free, for the family that took him in expected something in return. Being a thief was no new profession for Ion and so he managed to do some petty thieving and earn his keep for a few years. However when his luck ran out and the police caught him he was once again left to his own devices, accused to being a gypsy thief. He was too young to suffer a severe penalty and was merely kicked out of Istanbul. Ion made his way southwards, stealing and hitchhiking – although he suffered several unpleasant encounters he won’t speak of- until he reached Israel. It was then he finally made his way to Jerusalem where he has been ever since. Strange for a Gypsy to settle but Ion likes Jerusalem, he feels it is ‘right’ to stay here. For the last four years Ion has worked on learning Hebrew and English and to raise himself from living in the streets to actually getting a small place. He is lodged with a Jewish family and pays them a small amount of money for using a room in their place. Ion doesn’t know them well and he hardly sees them, something he considers for the best. Ion speaks a gypsy dialect, Hebrew, Arabic, Turkish and English. His aptitude in languages has given him a job now that he has more or less settled in Jerusalem. These are mostly small interpreting jobs and being a tour-guide of some sorts. However his spelling in most of these is atrocious as he never formally learned the language or its grammatical rules and so on. He can speak it casually but that’s about it- it doesn’t matter much to Ion as that is what he requires on a day-to-day basis. He hasn’t given up on being a thief either; it’s a compulsion Ion can’t help. |
There are two major features to Ion’s personality; his social awkwardness and his kleptomaniac problem. His difficult ethnic background has made Ion quite a conflictive individual. On the one hand he finds it easy to get along with people even if inside he feels awkward, on the other he has suffered open discrimination from both sides and as such he dislikes the idea of approaching people in general. Though whenever he does approach others he is very polite despite of what they may reply or how they act towards him. Ion is a firm believer than having manners is the best way to deal with things. Despite the fact that he finds it easy to deal with people to some Ion tends to comes across as very uncertain and shy due to his overly polite manners and hesitation. Ion is also clever enough to be able to talk himself out of most problematic spots, especially if he gets caught trying to steal something. Which does happen from time to time. Being a gypsy haunts him and Ion will either deny it or ignore the remark. Though his people mark him as an outsider, outsiders think of him as a gypsy. For this reason Ion has grown to be quite uncertain in his identity and has a tendency to expect judgment from the moment one first meets him. |
